Father Knows Less

Posted today on The Advocate online:
In her new memoir, Now It's My Turn (Simon and Schuster/Threshold Editions, 2006), Mary Cheney, the lesbian daughter of Vice President Dick Cheney, writes that when she told her parents she was gay, the first words out of her father’s mouth “were exactly the ones that I wanted to hear: ‘You’re my daughter, and I love you, and I just want you to be happy.’”

She left out the part where Darth Cheney said, "I don't want any of the other queers to be happy, so I'll help prop up an administration that has systematically waged war against their families and used them as scapegoats to raise money and turn out the bigoted party base, but I do want you to be happy, princess. Or prince. Or whatever you'll be calling yourself after you go to my barber and get a scary dyke haircut."

I don't think so. I for one never did react the way you think when I found out after reading your articles. Well, what does one do when they find out the person they like or love is gay or lesbian. I was shocked! And I closed the web page so fast. I bit my lip and took a deep breath. I just want you to be happy. Now why can't you believe that?

I believe you, dear, and I believe he loves his daughter. I just don't think he gives a damn about the rest of us, otherwise he would not be a part of the scapegoating of gay people. He and W. get their base out to vote by assuring them they hate the queers. Some of the fundraising materials that get sent via direct mail would have you believe that they are defending you against the ultimate evil...me. I really don't know how Mary Cheney can live with herself having campaigned for them knowing that they would be working to ensure that she remains a second-class citizen in this country.
